Olympics 2016 Recap: An Exclusive Look Inside the Oakley Safe House

We got a special look inside Oakley’s Safe House, home to select athletes during the Rio Olympics

See what took place behind these doors at the 2016 Olympics.

The storylines (including one of our own articles) leading up to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro foreshadowed concern, contamination, and crime, but the games came and went without any major issues. Brazil ended up hosting an epic spectacle with crowds witnessing awe-inspiring achievements on a daily basis. Not only were there vibrant scenes of success in the fields of competition, but the streets of Rio were buzzing with great stories of global unity.

One of the most happening venues was the Oakley Safe House, which hosted more than 500 of the top international athletes that the company sponsors. I went down to Rio along with Oakley to interview some of those athletes, and I got an exclusive welcome to their invite-only Safe House. The sunglasses giant, who is known for its sporty line of high-tech shades, set up these Safe Houses in each of the last five Olympics (including Rio) with the goal of giving the team a home away from home. There was comfort food, entertainment, and intercontinental mingling — and we got a taste of it all.

Here’s a recap of what we found inside the Oakley Safe House at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

We deployed new functionalities for creator credits and features. There is now support for migrating existing text entries to matching creator records (or feature records). The way we record signatures also changed after we gained experience with creator records. Signatures are now separate database objects.

On the display side, we added lists of creators who worked on a series or feature, as well as an issue list for features. For both of course more of our data needs to be migrated from text entries to linked records. If you ever wondered to help with the content of the database, now is a good time.

Uploading Milestone!

We reached 950,000 cover scans !

We reached 950,000 comic covers. The milestone issue was Wild Western #3 a British reprint of Wild Western (Marvel, 1948 series) #47 (January 1956).

Volunteers Wanted For Adding New Comics

Each week, a small number of GCD volunteers add listings to our database for the new comics released that week in North America. These are just the basic listings, not full indexes. This makes it easier for other volunteers who upload covers and for indexers, as well as for people using my.comics.org.

Each volunteer covers one publisher or a small group of publishers ("D publishers except DC", for example). From public sources such as ComicsList and Diamond Previews online, they add the issues and make note of the prices and a few other details. We are looking for additional volunteers for this weekly task.
