Why this drink is so popular

This IBA (International Bartenders Association) Official Cocktail is most popular during the summer months. It’s typically considered a beach recipe, served up at Tiki bars at your favorite resort.

The recipe is simple, and delicious. The results are pretty too, making it a gorgeous addition to your summertime parties.

The Sex on the Beach Recipe

Unlike Sex on the Beach’s name — which gets right to the point — the origins of the drink itself aren’t so straightforward.

Some versions of the story claim that the cocktail was invented in 1987 by a bartender named Ted Pizio who worked at Confetti’s Bar in — you guessed it — Florida. The tale goes that a peach schnapps brand called National Distribution ran a contest that awarded $1,000 to the bar that sold the most peach schnapps. In response, Pizio set out to incorporate it into a recipe of his own, and the Sex on the Beach was born. However, there’s also evidence that the recipe was featured in a 1982 American Bartenders School guidebook, which predates Ted’s story by five years.

Wherever it came from, the Sex on the Beach is downright delicious and hard not to like. To make one, all you’ll need are cranberry and orange juice, plus some vodka and peach schnapps. Garnish with an orange wedge and cocktail cherry for the final product: a candied concoction that’ll be sure to transport you to the neon-hued Fort Lauderdale spring break beaches circa ‘87.

  • The choice of vodka is not important in this drink. Save some money and use your favorite "well" vodka. There are some good and inexpensive vodkas available that are perfect for heavily flavored cocktails like this.
  • If you like, transform this cocktail into a pitcher or punch drink. Simply keep the ingredients in proportion and increase each to the amount you need.

Recipe Variation

Is There a Good Substitute for Crème de Cassis?

Crème de cassis is a black currant-flavored liqueur that also makes an appearance in the Kir and Chimayó cocktails. While not essential in the bar, it's a nice, inexpensive liqueur to have around. Though it's key in the more traditional bliss on the beach recipe, its infrequent use in the bar has caused many to turn to Chambord as a substitute the difference between the black currant and black raspberry liqueurs is not significant. Grenadine can also be used.

Where Was the Sex on the Beach Created?

It is without fail that the true origins of many famous cocktails are a little hazy. This drink is no different and there are a few popular stories circulating. One of the more common accounts for this cocktail's creation points to 1987 and the rise of peach schnapps. Reportedly, liquor distributor National Distribution held a contest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to see which bartender could sell the most peach schnapps. Ted Pizio from the bar Confettis won the $1000 prize thanks to his mix of vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and grenadine. He gave it the name because "sex on the beach" was one of the main reasons to spend spring break in Ft. Lauderdale. While that is a great story, according to some bartenders who worked in the '80s, this was not the drink's first appearance. Some claim to have mixed the drink as early as 1981. There are also stories from that early that refer to the Chambord version under the name "Florida sunset."

Why Is It Called Sex on the Beach?

Since the origin is unclear, the true meaning behind the name is as well. However, it likely stems from a scenario similar to the spring break theory. The '70s and '80s were filled with tall, fruity, vodka-based drinks and many had the funky, sexy, and sometimes wacky names that get stuck in the minds of drinkers. "Sex on the beach" is great for selling drinks, though we like to call it "bliss on the beach" because everyone should be comfortable talking about this great drink.

How Strong Is the Bliss on the Beach?

The bliss on the beach is made primarily of nonalcoholic mixers, so it's not as strong as you might expect. Typically, the alcohol content falls in the 11 percent ABV (22 proof) range. It is a very average mixed drink, but it's easy to drink, too. This one can sneak up on you.

What Mixes Well With Peach Schnapps?

Peach schnapps is a sweet, fruity liqueur that's a common fixture in bars. Its strength varies, from 20 percent to 50 percent ABV (40 to 80 proof), so some peach schnapps can be stronger than the average vodka. You can drink peach schnapps straight, though some can be rather syrupy and better served on the rocks. It's also a versatile mixer and the key ingredient in many peach cocktails. It pairs well with other fruits, including cranberry juice in the woo woo cocktail, though it's also delicious when mixed with hot chocolate.

Sex on the Beach Drink Ingredients

This is such a simple cocktail to make! There are just 4 ingredients that you have to mix together and serve over ice, because it does need to be nice and cold.

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add all of the ingredients.
  3. Put the lid on and shake well. Once the outside of the shaker is very cold you can pour over a glass of ice.

I like to use a martini shaker that is filled with ice and just shake everything together. This ensures that it gets super cold and also everything is well blended. Nothing worse that sipping on a drink and having all the vodka sitting at the bottom.

I am kind of on a roll with recreating classic cocktails lately. I recently posted a Tequila Sunrise and it has become popular very quickly. And why not, it is super pretty with the layers and so refreshing. But I think one of my favorites has to be the Long Island Iced Tea. You think of it as the drink you had in college, but it needs to be brought back. It is so tasty!

Do you have any favorite cocktails that I should be making? There are a bunch of Drink Recipes on the blog already, but I am all for sharing more. I mean, cocktails just make life more fun. Be sure to have the sex on the beach ingredients on hand at all times, and you can whip this up in just seconds. I like to have the little bottles of cranberry and orange juice in my pantry, so cocktails are easy to make and not waste a big container or juice.

What Could Make Your Sex on the Beach Cocktail Even Better? Turning It Into a Slushy

I don't know about you, but I firmly believe that every cocktail is better when it's a slushy. (OK, maybe not every one, but all my favorites.) Case in point: this sex on the beach slushy. It's got everything you expect in a sex on the beach cocktail, but by using frozen fruit and some ice, it becomes a refreshing slushy instead of just a standard cocktail. It's perfect for backyard lounging, sitting by the pool, or if you're me, relaxing on a fire escape in the middle of New York because it's the only outside space you have.

This recipe is incredibly easy to put together. After you put your cranberry juice in your glass, you just throw the rest of the ingredients into a blender and blend. That's truly it. You can garnish your drink with orange slices, maraschino cherries, or any other fruit that makes you happy, or you can just leave it bare and chug it accordingly. Either way is perfect. You can also switch up your liquors if you want — I tried it with peach vodka for an extra kick of peach, and it was absolutely delicious!

TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY & MAKE YOUR SHOPPING LIST:

- Country Time Pink Lemonade Mix

- Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka

- Simply Brand (Apple, Orange, Etc.) Juice Container

Carefully wash out your Simply brand Juice Container. Then use the funnel to neatly pour 4 scoops of Country Time Pink Lemonade into the container. Next, measure out 1 cup of Smirnoff brand Watermelon Vodka, 1/3 cup Triple Sec, and 1/3 cup Malibu Coconut Rum into a measuring cup and use the funnel to add your mixture. Using cold water, fill the rest of the container up to the base of the neck. Rinse 4 strawberries and cut straight across with a knife to remove the stem. Then place the strawberries upside down on the cutting board and slice evenly into 4 pieces using two motions forming a cross. Drop the strawberries in, add water to the top, cap and shake gently to mix. Refrigerate and voila! Hippie Juice!

The Sex in the Driveway Drink is a twist on the classic Sex on the Beach Cocktail. Instead of cranberry juice, this cocktail recipe uses Blue Curacao. It is quick and easy to make and tastes fantastic.

I will say this drink can be really strong in flavor so you want to make sure you stir it after mixing everything together.

The drink has a peach, orange, and lemon-lime flavor that is refreshing. It is a strong drink consistent with ordering a double drink. You can easily adapt the amount of vodka you use in the recipe if you want a lighter drink.

I am not sure how this cocktail got its name. I will let you use your imagination and come up with a story as to why it is called a Sex in the Driveway drink.

Ingredients

Vodka - You can also use white rum if you prefer the taste. Feel free to lower the amount of vodka used if you want a lighter drink.

Sprite - If you don't have Sprite you can also use sparkling water like Lacroix in a citrus flavor.

Tools Needed

How to make Sex in the Driveway Drink

Step 1 - Add ice to a highball glass. Add in Peach Schnapps

Make sure you add the alcohol in this order so you get the layered look in your cocktail.

Step 2 - Add in Blue Curacao

Step 5 - garnish with a lemon wheel and add a paper straw.

You will want to stir it before taking a sip so you don't end up sipping straight peach schnapps or blue curacao.

Recipe Tips

Pour each of the ingredients in order and stir at the end.

Serve with a fun paper straw.

You can double or trip this recipe and serve it in a pitcher if you are hosting a party. Make up a pitcher with the peach schnapps, vodka, and blue curacao and have a bottle of sprite next to it so guests can finish off their drinks.

Set out a fun assortment of paper straws and a bowl of lemon wheels for garnishes and you are ready for a great summer party.

If you don't have highball glasses you can serve this in any glass big enough to make sure you get sprite added to blend the flavors. This can be served in a hurricane glass similar to a blue lagoon cocktail, or in a martini glass.
